Act 1 (scene 3)
Short
|
In Act 1 scene 3, on the heath, the witches reappear again. They curse the sailor so they become wicked and magical. When Macbeth and Banquo meet the witches, they said that Macbeth is the Thane of Glamis, and the Thane of Cawdor, and will become the future king of Scotland. Banquo quickly asks the witches to tell him about his future, too. However, when Macbeth asks how they know all of his information, they vanish. As Banquo talks with Ross and Angus, Macbeth considers the prophecy, "My seated heart knock at my ribs" (Shakespeare 13). In this quotation, Macbeth feels that he's losing himself, and hopes that if fate says he'll become king, he won't have to act to make it happen. Later, the messengers, Ross and Angus arrive and report to Macbeth that he is the Thane of Cawdor. They return to the king.

Coments |
Some of the literary devices are used in this scene is simile and alliteration. For instance, one of the witches states, "I will drain him dry as hay" (Shakespeare 18). This line uses simile as it compares the dryness to that of hay using the word “as”. Another example of simile is when Macbeth uses simile to compare the witches' disappearance to breath evaporating in the wind, "Into the air; and what seemed corporeal, melted, As breath into the wind" (Shakespeare 81-82). This comparison is interesting, because Macbeth and Banquo use the environmental descriptions (breath, bubbles, water) to explain an abnormal event. Macbeth uses alliteration with the repeating consonant sounds, "So foul and fair a day I have not seen" (Shakespeare 37). This phrase becomes a theme throughout Macbeth, that outward appearance does not always suggest inward motive. Shakespeare also emphasis the motif of nature saying that its against the nature to kill the king. The scene starts to be more interesting as Macbeth decides whether or not he wants to kill or be the king. |
Question & predictions
Questions: Why did the witches decide to appear at this moment? Why did the witches decide to talk to Macbeth, what is the point? Will Macbeth kill the king?
Predictions: I predict that king Duncan will die since Macbeth has such a strong desire to be the king and the witches are helping him to meet his goal.

comments/Review on movies
Both of the movies are nice to watch for act 1 scene 3 for Macbeth. I prefer watching the older version, "Great Performances: Macbeth (Full) 2010" rather than "Watch Macbeth Watch Movies Online Free ". One of the reasons is because the older version matches the original play better especially the setting and the tone. However, the modern version is more violent, they uses guns instead of swords.
