Comparing Movies ACT 3 SCENE 1-4 (Note that the movies on the home page)
In the modern version movie from act 3, scene 1-4 there are many differences comparing the older version. In the beginning, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is riding on a horse instead of Banquo without any crowns on. When Banquo and his son leaves, Macbeth holds the rifle and aims it at them. In the older version Banquo and his son leaves while riding on the horse and Macbeth does not have a rifle. After when Banquo and his son leaves Macbeth then hires two murderers and persuade them to kill Banquo and Fleance in the kitchen. But in the older version, they are discussing the plan in the Macbeth’s room. Macbeth tells Lady Macbeth that’s their job has not completed yet. Lady Macbeth seems depressed, so her husband comforts her by dancing in the room.
During the murder scene, three murderers are dressed up as police and kills Banquo on the train and Fleance escapes. In the scene, it shows that Banquo wakes up from the dead like a ghost when the murderers are gone. However, in the older version the murderers killed Banquo in the forest. Also, Banquo seems to defend himself more in the modern version. Later, when the party starts one of the murder arrives in the dining room and he tells Macbeth that they have done part of the job and Fleance flee. In the older version, Macbeth’s guards kill the murders. When Macbeth returns to the party in the modern version, a maid sits in Macbeth’s chair and they make eye contact. However, there was no maid in the older version and no one but Banquo’s ghost was sitting on the chair. Also, the maids are dressed up like witches in the first scene in the modern version. When Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo standing on the table walking towards him, Macbeth yells while standing on the table and all the guests freak out. Then Lady Macbeth explains to the guests that Macbeth always talks to himself since he was a child. Lady Macbeth then entertains the guests and they dance. In the older version, Macbeth sees Banquo’s ghost walking up to him from the seat he is going to sit and the ghost only appears once in this version of the scene. Then Lady Macbeth asks the guests to leave and the guests did not dance. In the modern version when the ghost appears the second time, all the guests freak out and leave. Lady Macbeth cries and she seems frustrated for Macbeth’s actions but in the older version Lady Macbeth does not cry but she looks embarrassed.
The modern version is longer and it’s more dramatic. Also, during the party, there are not any women excepted for Macbeth’s wife but, in the other version all the guests bought their wife with them. Also, the animals are there as entertainments. There is more symbolism in the older version such as owning animals means wealth. In theses scene Lady Macbeth plays a smaller role. One of the major thing in this play is that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth “call down the darkness,” it is like a spell that the witches use in the play. These scenes in both of these versions show there are many differences through the setting and actions in the movies.
