Theme: The theme in these scene, is nature. As Duncan acts like a gardener in nature who believes his role as King in terms of what he can provide with what he desires. Duncan declares that in act 1 scene 4 "I have begun to plant thee, and will labour to make thee full of growing" (Shakespeare 32-33). Macbeth goes ahead to prepare for the King's visit, but notes that Malcolm now stands between him and the throne. He begs the stars to "hide your fires, let not light see my black and deep desires" (Shakespeare 57). Macbeth thinks that no one will see the dark side of him for what he wishes but he “hides his fires” because what he wishes is against the nature (killing the king). The description of the setting and the guards were mentioned as nature. Some of the Literary Devices Imagery is used when king Duncan announce, "I have begun to plant thee, and will labour to make thee full of growing" (Shakespeare 32-33). The used of nature in Duncan’s quote clearly shows that his country is growing with success. Also, in this scene it uses the nature to expresses the growth and the fertility between Banquo and the king. According to the witches’ prophecy, the seed symbolize Banquo’s son and he mentions to the king that he will promise that he will allow to grow in the king’s favor, as he is dedicating “the harvest” to King Duncan. This reminds Banquo that in act 1, scene 3, the witches third prophecy, "look into the seeds of time / And say which one will grow, and which will not" (Shakespeare 61-62). In this case, the seed symbolize Banquo’s son will be the king. Setting In act 1 scene 4 it takes place in Duncan palace. In act 1 scene 5-7 it takes place in Macbeth castle and also in Duncan's chamber. The description of the setting and the guards were mentioned as nature. Character description Macbeth seems angry and Jealous that he heard that Malcolm is the future King. King Duncan is happy. Lady Macbeth seems aggressive in terms of what she says to Macbeth. Reaction to the play Shocked, the reason is because I can't believe that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth agrees/decided to kill the King even though the king was nice to them. I was also surprised by the fact that Lady Macbeth seems innocent in the beginning but then she became evil and smart coming up with the ideas and plans to kill Duncan. |
Questions & predictions
Predictions
I predict that Macbeth will not only kill the king but both of the prince especially Malcom. The reason is because he wants his wish to come true. I think that Banquo wants to become the king too and he will plan to kill the king at Macbeth’s castle and blame the murderer on Macbeth. I think lady Macbeth will be the one who kills the king instead if Macbeth gives up because lady Macbeth wants her husband to be the king.
Questions
Since in this play, killing the king is against the nature then why is Macbeth still trying to claim the kingdom? Why isn't Banquo help Macbeth? Why Banquo did not report to the king what the witches said to Macbeth and himself?
Why would Duncan still trust Macbeth if the past Cawdor betrayed him? Why did Shakespeare decided to introduce Lady Macbeth's evil characteristics to us instead of a kind wife?
